They hover as a cloud of witnesses above this Nation. - Henry Ward Beecher
Throughout the last 150 years - since the end of the Civil War - Memorial Day has been celebrated as a way to honor those who lost their lives in war. First unofficially observed in 1866 as 'Decoration Day', this was a day set aside to decorate the graves of Civil War fallen soldiers. Soon after World War I, it was suggested that the name be changed to Memorial Day, and to include the men and women lost during any military initiative or battle. In 1971, Congress officially placed Memorial Day on the calendar, and the heart behind it is still the same to this day. If you are looking for Memorial Day floral arrangements to offer respect to friends and loved ones, you can trust the experts at Ron & Alicia Robinson Florist to deliver. While most of the country is just starting to dig out from the last of the winter storms, here in California beautiful weather is a way of life. That being said, we do share one important aspect of springtime with people across the nation – the return of beautiful, bright flowers! The official ambassador of April is the daisy – a flowering plant which symbolizes the innocence and childlike wonder of the spring season.
There are over 23,000 species in the daisy family, with the most recognizable relative of the daisy being the sunflower. They are members of the Asteraceae family, so named because of the star-like shape of the ray petals. Other branches on the family tree include such popular flowers as dahlias, marigolds, and chrysanthemums; as well as strange cousins like lettuce, chamomile, and even artichoke!
