As Mother’s Day draws near, and we think about the meaning behind the holiday – it is interesting to note that moms, flowers, and celebrations have been associated with each other since the very earliest stories of culture. Down through all the ancient civilizations, the matriarchs of a family or clan were given special recognition, and often decorated with flowers during the ceremonies.
To this day, flowers are the #1 gift given on Mother’s Day, and here at Ron & Alicia Robinson Florist we couldn’t imagine celebrating our Moms without flowers. But what is the Mother’s Day history? Many nations around the world celebrate the “American version” of Mothers’ Day, which was established in 1908 after Anna Jarvis finally convinced Congress to add the holiday to the calendar. Ms. Jarvis’ mother had been a strong civil rights leader and had been instrumental in uniting women – especially mothers – after the Civil War.
In Ireland, however, the tradition goes back much further, and stems from a local Christian holiday, “Mothering Sunday”. On the last Sunday of Lent, Catholics were called to make a pilgrimage back to their home “mother” church. Gradually, the focus of the day changed to include honoring one’s mother, and a favorite tradition was giving mom a wildflower bouquet picked while walking to the church service.
Historically, flowers have represented a distinct language all their own, and each bloom is thought to possess inherent symbolism. Pink roses, for instance, signify deep appreciation, as do pink calla lilies. The Iris exudes a recognition of wisdom and courage, and orchids are thought to represent beauty and grace. This year, when you choose the floral bouquet for the special Mom in your life, make it extra meaningful by choosing flowers that represent her unique personality.
Mother’s Day history proves that Moms have always been loved. At Ron & Alicia Robinson Florist, we look forward to honoring all mothers, as well as those who have stepped in to be mothers.
