Homecoming weekend has a long and colorful history, dating back to 1910. We can thank the athletic director at the University of Missouri for his vision. He decided to invite past alumni “back home” to watch the football game against rival University of Kansas, perhaps to fill the stands. Little did he know that over 10,000 past students would flock back to the event, which also included speeches, rallies and a parade.
Over the years, more events have been added to individual school’s traditions, although most weekend still revolve around a football game.Common activities include spirit rallies, tailgating parties, the crowning of the Homecoming Court, and of course – the homecoming dance. If you are attending your own formal dance and need flowers, Ron & Alicia Robinson Florist is here to design the perfect corsage and boutonniere for the event.
It is not just a fashion statement to sport matching florals on the big night – the tradition actually has a rich tradition. During the Victorian Era, women often wore flowers on the bodice of their dress, This was both to advertise her economic status (arranged flowers were expensive and considered only for the elite), but to provide a buffer from some of the less than pleasant smells in the streets. In France, these flowers were named “bouquets des corsages” – flowers for the bodice – but the name was eventually shortened.
If a lady wished to express interest in a suitor, she would pluck a flower from her bouquet and place it in the buttonhole of his coat. The complimentary flowers would indicate their relationship with each other. It is easy to see how this translated down the centuries to matching flowers for couples heading to a formal event.
