The Best Flowers for Sympathy Arrangements

* Lilies –  These elegant flowers are most commonly associated with memorial services. They signify the innocence and purity that has been restored to the soul of your departed loved one. Both white lilies and stargazer lilies are considered appropriate.

* Chrysanthemums – A popular bloom that represents love, truth, and happiness, mums are a great way to honor and remember someone who lived a full life. Just make sure the deceased is not from an Asian or Latin American culture as mums in those countries symbolize death and are only used for placing on graves.

* Carnations – With a soft fragrance and long-lasting beauty, carnations are often used for funeral flowers. The traditional white carnation stands for love and innocence, the red carnation denotes admiration, and the pink carnation is symbolic of remembrance.

* Orchids – These elegant plants convey that you will always love the deceased; white phalaenopsis and dendrobium orchids are considered appropriate in this respect.

* Gladioli – The gladiolus bloom is tall and elegant, are is generally used in traditional fan sprays. The gladiolus symbolizes sincerity, strength, and moral integrity. They are available in a broad spectrum of hues, allowing you to send these beautiful flowers in their favorite color.

* Roses – Roses are a beloved symbol in all stages of life, and can be particularly meaningful when choosing funeral flowers. White roses signify reverence, red roses denote love and respect, pink roses convey gratitude and yellow roses stand for enduring ties with the deceased.

* Daffodils, Tulipsand Hydrangea – Spring flowers are symbolic of hope, renewal, and new beginnings. They are believed to bring encouragement to someone who is grieving. They can often be replanted outside for a lasting reminder of your love and sentiments.

When to Send Sympathy Flowers

Timing for when to send sympathy flowers can vary depending upon a number of factors, but a good rule of thumb is to order funeral flowers at least 24 hours in advance of the funeral or memorial service, and 48 hours or more for larger pieces like wreaths or sprays. Many funeral homes like to have florals in place several hours before the ceremony, so the earlier you order, the better.

Sympathy flowers or gifts intended for the family rather than for the service may be sent directly to the home. The timing here is not as important as long they are received within several days before or after the service.

When More than Words Are Needed

The most important thing to remember is that a thoughtful gift of flowers is always welcome and helpful, too, for grieving family members and friends. Flowers can convey sentiments and emotions words often can’t and let people know they are in your thoughts during a difficult time.
