When Marian McQuade sent the draft of a bill to Congress, asking for the institution of National Grandparents Day, she had a distinct vision as to what the purpose of the day should be. The West Virginia mother of 15 (and grandmother to many more) wanted a time set aside to honor traditions and family history as communicated by the older generations. She also felt it was an effective way to encourage families to gather often to share and learn from each other. In 1978, Congress agreed, and the first Sunday after Labor Day was designated.
