Flowers have been an integral part of our society since the beginning of time. From as far back as the ancient cultures, we have records of how flowers have been used in all aspects of society – and the rose is no different. In fact, the rose has earned the reputation as the Queen of Flowers for its consistent presence in love, war, and culture. Today, we recognize them primarily for their beauty – but for National Rose Month, we’d like to offer a few amazing facts about this iconic flower. We are sure you will come away with a new appreciation for the world’s most popular flower.
Ron & Alicia Robinson Florist has great rose specials in June to celebrate National Rose Month. Be sure to give us a call for rose bouquets and designs.
The rose is thought to have approximately 150 naturally occurring species, although there are literally thousands of hybrids and cultivars. Interestingly, none of the species of the rose originated south of the equator – all were found in the Northern Hemisphere. Of course, these days roses are grown worldwide and exhibit amazing diversity – some blooms grow to over two feet across, while other rose varieties have buds as small as a grain of rice.
World Record: The largest rose bloom ever bred was a pink rose bred by Nikita K. Rulhoksoffski from San Onofre, California. The bloom was an astounding 33 inches in diameter.
Even with all the creativity with breeding and hybridization, there are still no true-blue roses in the world. Incredibly, roses lack a gene to produce delphinidin, which is the source of blue coloring. For the same reason, “black roses” are not actually black, but an exceptionally dark red.
Healthy Roses? Rose hips, the accessory fruit on the rose bush, offer one of the highest concentrations of Vitamin C known to man.
When considering the perfect gift for anniversaries, graduations, or birthdays, roses are always a great choice – and in June, rose bouquets help us to celebrate National Rose Month. Whether you choose yellow roses for your best friend, pink for your daughter, or red for your sweetheart, you can be assured that Ron & Alicia Robinson Florist will provide the freshest, most beautiful roses in Glendora, Whittier and Roland Heights.
